At least 20 people were killed in clan clashes over farmland ownership in Defow village in Hiran region, Garowe Online reported Wednesday (January 21st).
Medics at Beledweyne General Hospital and local clan elders said scores of others were wounded in the clashes and that tensions remain high in the area.
Traditional elders have been dispatched to the area to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the fighting, Somalia’s RBC Radio reported Tuesday.
The Hiran regional administration confirmed the clashes, saying they were sparked by land disputes.
Somali lawmakers and traditional elders called for an end to inter-clan land disputes in Hiran earlier this month.
Defow has been the site of intermittent clan clashes since mid-last year.
