Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will spend three nights in police custody pending bail ruling on Monday after his arrest over graft claims.

Lawyers representing the Nairobi Governor had moved to court seeking anticipatory bail.

Led by Cecil Miller, the advocates filed a certificate of urgency citing integrity issues against the arresting authority: EACC.

They further argued that Sonko was not a flight risk even though the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission said he was arrested while trying to flee from Nairobi.

“EACC confirms that Nairobi City County Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi has been arrested while escaping arrest at a road block in Voi and is being transferred to Nairobi to face charges of corruption and economic crime,” the agency said on Twitter.

Sonko later issued a statement through his communications department denying claims that he had been on the run.

Hours later, the court ordered that Sonko remain in police custody until Monday when he is arraigned in court.

High Court Judge John Onyiengo said the suspect did not prove that his constitutional rights had been violated.

He and 15 other suspects are to face eight charges including conflict of interest, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering and acquisition of proceeds of crime.
